Is Chhorii 2 the horror movie on Prime Video fans have been waiting for? Discover if it delivers the thrills, suspense, and scares in this in-depth review

1. Storyline:

Chhorii 2 picks up right where Chhorii (Part 1) left off, continuing the eerie journey of Sakshi (Nushrratt Bharuccha). This time, her daughter Ishani faces a terrifying ordeal. The followers of Daasi Maa—the sinister ghost witch played by Soha Ali Khan—kidnap her.

The setting shifts to a pitch-dark underground cave in the same mysterious village from the first part. Inside the cave, Daasi Maa draws her strength from Ishani, which intensifies the darkness and suspense even further.

As a result, the story builds solid tension. Sakshi has just two days to rescue her daughter before a deadly curse unleashes. Whether she can beat the clock forms the crux of the narrative.

The plot remains engaging, retaining its horror-thriller essence. While certain scenes deliver genuine goosebumps and creepy twists, others don’t hit quite as hard.

2. Performances:

Nushrratt Bharuccha as Sakshi delivers a solid and emotionally grounded performance. She brings both energy and vulnerability, especially during the climax. The mother-daughter bond adds emotional weight and depth to her character.

Soha Ali Khan as Daasi Maa leaves a lasting impression with her eerie screen presence. She shines the most in the cave scenes. A standout moment is when she narrates a king’s tale while cooking soup—a chilling yet captivating scene. Nonetheless, a few more intense scenes have elevated her role even further.

Ishani, playing Sakshi’s daughter, is a pleasant surprise. Her serious tone and mature expressions contribute to the horror element. Her dynamic with Soha Ali Khan’s character brings a layer of psychological intrigue.

Gashmeer Mahajani as Sameer, a police officer, adds pace and structure to the film. His expressions and comic timing offer a breather in between tense moments, making his role effective.

The supporting cast fits the atmosphere and contributes meaningfully to the overall storytelling.

3. Direction & Screenplay:

The screenplay begins on a high note, instantly immersing viewers into Sakshi’s dark world. The continuation from Part 1 is seamless, and the underground cave setting amplifies the fear factor. Early horror sequences and creepy visuals work well to create suspense.

Yet, as the story unfolds, the screenplay starts to show cracks. While the emotional core between Sakshi and her daughter is maintained, the film struggles to balance horror and drama consistently. Some scenes feel stretched or repetitive, which slows down the momentum.

There are moments with strong visual and narrative potential that aren’t fully explored. For example, Daasi Maa’s backstory is expanded to deepen the lore and fear. Dialogues also feel basic at times, lacking the punch needed for high-stakes confrontations.

The direction by Vishal Furia is decent. He creates a few standout horror scenes using silence and minimal lighting, but the overall pacing is uneven. Some transitions between horror and emotional sequences feel abrupt.

Additionally, the editing should have been tighter. A sharper edit would have improved the film’s rhythm and intensified the scares.

4. Songs & Background Score:

There are no songs in the film, which is suitable for the genre. Nevertheless, the background score doesn’t always match the eerie tone. While a few moments have an effective build-up, many intense scenes lack a spine-chilling soundtrack that heightened fear. A scarier, more immersive score was clearly needed.

5. Cinematography:

The cave scenes stand out the most in terms of cinematography. The lighting and shadows successfully create a claustrophobic and tense environment. Elsewhere, yet, the visuals feel ordinary. More atmospheric lighting or creative camera work would have elevated the horror experience across the board.

6. Final Verdict:

Chhorii 2 delivers a decent engaging horror story with good performances and some version of basic entertainment. Although it starts with strong elements, there are minor flaws in the screenplay. The background music is reduced. There are minor editing issues and some non-impactful horror scenes which are mild (some) but there. These can impact the enjoyment for some people. Nevertheless, not everyone will be affected.

Still, it’s a one-time watch for fans of the genre. The suspenseful climax hints at the arrival of Chhorii 3 where they will continue the same story ahead. Its release on Prime Video will attract horror lovers. Many others seeking a creepy weekend film will be drawn due to its theme and plot.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
